Pillows come in all shapes and sizes, and finding the right one for you can significantly improve the quality of your sleep. At DOWNLITE, we believe there is a perfect pillow out there for everyone, and it’s our goal to help you find it!

When shopping for pillows, the most important factors for most people to consider are material, density, and size:

  • Consider the material used in your pillow—inside and out. The material inside is called fill, and it affects the overall density, supportiveness, and feel of the pillow. Most pillows are filled with either down, feathers, down alternatives, or a combination and are surrounded by soft cotton fabric meant to be covered by a pillowcase or protector.

  • The density of your pillow, also known as firmness or supportiveness, is a factor of the type and amount of fill inside. Pillows range from extra soft to extra firm, although most people prefer medium density pillows. Depending on your sleep position, certain densities may better support your body during sleep.

  • The size of your pillow refers to its horizontal length and width and corresponds to the size of your mattress. For example, two king size pillows will fit perfectly side to side on a king size mattress. Another factor to consider is loft, or height, which is influenced by the density and overall design.

How to choose the right pillow fill

Down pillows are filled with soft and fluffy down clusters sourced from geese or ducks. This natural fill is lightweight, breathable, and adapts well to movement throughout the night. The tightly-woven, specially-treated fabric used for down pillows regulates temperature, wicks away moisture, and promotes hygiene.

DOWNLITE down pillows are made from responsibly-sourced down. The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification ensures that down and feathers are ethically sourced throughout the entire supply chain.

Types of down pillow fill:

  • Goose down is considered the most luxurious pillow filling, delivering unbeatable softness due to the large down clusters of mature geese. The outstanding comfort and longevity of goose down pillows may be well worth the price tag in the long run.

  • Duck down is a close second to goose down. Duck down clusters may be slightly smaller than goose down, but these pillows offer incredibly soft and fluffy support for all types of sleepers.

Down alternative pillows are filled with synthetic materials, expertly crafted to imitate the softness of natural down. Down alternative pillows are naturally hypoallergenic, easy to clean, and less expensive than down fills. This may be a good choice for anyone with feather allergies or those who prefer to avoid natural products.

Types of down alternative pillow fill:

  • PrimaLoft® is the closest down alternative to white goose down. This silky-smooth polyester blend mimics the billowy softness of down. Primaloft® is also hydrophobic, meaning it does not absorb water, making drying quick and easy.

  • Intelli-pedic™ bedding is here to resolve common sleep problems such as temperature regulation, inconsistent support ratings, and allergies by using the newest innovations in sleep technology along with third party testing.

  • Spira™ is a fiber made of EcoCluster Polyester puff balls, often called Cluster Puff. This unique fill offers excellent volume and durability and is used in many hotel bed pillows.

  • LiquiLoft™ is a premium gel-like fiber that molds every movement for ultimate support and comfort. This squishy and adjustable fill is ideal for all-night toss-and-turn sleepers.

  • Continuous polyester fiber is a type of polyester batting that is sent through a machine to merge the loose filling. This process creates a seamless sheet that is cut and rolled, resulting in a pillow with more consistent density at a lower price point.

Feather pillows are filled with the sturdy outer feathers of geese and ducks. Because of the rigid quills, feather pillows tend to be firmer than down pillows. They also cost less than down and may need to be replaced more often.

Types of feather blend pillow fill:

  • Feather blend pillows are filled with a mix of down and feathers ranging from a 10–90 down to feather ratio to a 25–75 or even a 50–50 ratio.

  • Chamber pillows are a unique hybrid option filled with a feather core surrounded by fluffy down, creating an ideal balance of softness and support.

How to choose the right pillow density

A pillow’s density and loft, or height, are determined by the type and amount of fill. While down, feather, and down alternative pillows each have distinct characteristics that affect the shape and feel of the pillow, they can all be made in a variety of densities.

Because pillow loft and density affect the alignment of your body while you sleep, different types of pillows are recommended for each sleep position. For maximum comfort, we recommend soft pillows for stomach sleepers, medium pillows for back sleepers, and firm pillows for side sleepers.

Side Sleeper Pillows

Soft pillows let you sink into an ideal neck alignment for stomach sleepers.

Medium pillows provide the right head and neck support for back sleepers.

Firm pillows prop up your head, creating optimal alignment for side sleepers.

How to choose the right pillow size

Pillow sizes refer to the length and width of the pillow or the amount of space it will take up on your bed. They correspond with mattress sizes. For example, a queen size pillow is 30 inches wide and a queen size mattress is 60 inches wide, meaning that two pillows will fit perfectly. However, you can easily pair a single larger pillow with a smaller mattress size or smaller pillows with a larger mattress.
